... a mythological story about how Gautama was brought up in a royal household, where he was protected from suffering. He would often leave the palace grounds and on different occasions he saw a sick man, an old man, a corpse, and a wandering holy man (Bowker 60). This led to Gautamas inner struggle to search for meaning to life. He chose to live on the streets homeless to witness suffering and learn to escape from it. This time was known as the Great Renunciation. Gautama finally achieved enlightenment though mediation (Bowker 60). Mahayna the great vehicle is further doctrinal teachings of the Buddha at the appropriate times (Bowker 74). The teachings have developed through schools and traditions such as the one we talked about with Sister Angie called the Pure Land School. Mahayna is illustrated by calling Buddha Shakyamuni (Bowker 61).Shakyamuni means the enlightened one of the Shakya clan.Itstressesthe sutras. These are texts that containthe Buddhas teachings (Bowker 61). During my visit to the An Lac Temple, I observed examples of all of Ninian Smarts dimensions of religion. The Aesthetic was apparent immediately when I saw the temple and the statues. The ritual dimension can be seen in the ways the Bodhisattva faced forward and touched their heads to the ground. We could feel the experiential dimension when we used mental discipline, meditate and experience a powerful sense of calm. We saw mythological lohans that represent particular Buddhists who portray strong virtues and qualities. The noble Eightfold Path contains ways of ethical living. Following the Buddhist doctrines show the way a person could reach nirvana. The relationship in Buddhism between monks in the community or Sangha and the laypeople demonstrates the social dimension (Bowker 61). We could hear the material dimension when the struck the bell.
