... us that he was probably a member of the upper class. 2. Why were these individuals deposited in the bogs, No one knows for sure how these bodies ended up in bogs, but two theories are human sacrifice and execution. The second question is closely related to the first, in that they look at some of the same theories. One idea is that the people were criminals, and they were thrown into the bog after being executed. The outcasts were murdered and thrown into a bog and the rich were entombed. The physical remains of these bodies back up this idea, as it appears that most suffered violent deaths. For example Lindow 2 was found with multiple causes of death, and Lindow 3 was found with his head cut off. Another theory is that the bog bodies were thrown into the bogs as a sacrifice. There were objects such as jewelry and weapons found in or on the bog, or attached to some of the bodies themselves. This might suggest some kind of sacrifice or religious offering. If these people were sacrificed, there were no sign of animal sacrifices in the bog with them. In general bog bodies are not typical of Iron Age burial practices. Usually, at that time, the dead were cremated. In order to determine if there was any ritual significance in their death, archeologists look at the stomach contents of the bog people. The last meals found inside of the stomachs and intestines of the various bodies were not closely enough related to show importance. The stomach contents did show us the seasonality of the victim s death. Although the exact purpose is unknown, it is clear that these people did not just fall in and there was some purpose to the placement of the bodies.
