Since the wave velocity is given as v(T(mL))0.5, the frequency can be rewritten as f(T(mL))0.52L. This equation describes the frequency of a vibrating string given the tension (T), string mass (m), and string length (L). To adjust the tuning of a guitar, you must alter the tension in the string. For example, by doubling the tension of the string you could increase the frequency by 20.5.Changing the tension is done by turning the tuning nobs at the head of the guitar.A guitar works by vibrating strings at different frequencies we deem pleasurable to the ear. Due to the tuning of the guitar, these frequencies overlap and for a smooth sound. When the frequencies are not in sync, a wobble can be detected. Using a pitch pipe, or another non-electronic piece of equipment (another guitar), you can play a reference pitch and tune one string to the reference pitch. Once that is done, you can adjust the tension on the other strings (with respect to the first tuned string) in an octave scale to eliminate the wobble heard when the frequencies are out of sync.
