Introductiontothe Brine Shrimp Lab

... The adult brine shrimp Artemia is just over a centimeter in size. Although it may resemble a shrimp under magnification, Artemia is categorized in the order of primitive crustaceans (Duerr). Artemia are found in only about 250 locations around the world, since they exist in water bodies so high in salinity that their predators and competitors for food cannot survive alongside them (Duerr). Brine shrimp cysts are dispersed by wind and waves and will only hatch when the conditions are right (Duerr). The ability of Artemia cysts to remain dormant for long periods of time along with its yearlong life span, small size, and its requirement of no food make them valuable organisms for research and as a food source for fish and crustaceans in aquaculture systems (Duerr). The purpose of our experiment was to test the effect of varying salinities on the hatch rate of brine shrimp and to determine the ideal salinity level for Artemia cysts to hatch in. Our hypothesis is that a two percent salinity level is the ideal hatching environment for Artemia. Our results in the experiment showed the largest hatch rate in two percent salinity and the second largest hatch rate in four percent salinity. In our eight percent salinity we saw moderate hatching and in our zero percent salinity we saw little hatching. In addition, we saw that on day one there were no hatchings. On day two there was a large amount of hatching in the two and four percent salinities. Finally, on day four there was a consistent amount of hatching in every salinity level.
