... at 4 or 5 years of age, and to cut out the middle school or junior high stage. A student should graduate high school at the age of 16, and not 18. At this age, they are ready to enter the real world and either begin their working life, or to head off to college. Botstein's observations about high school in America are accurate, but his analysis of and solution to the problems that students face are absurd. The observation that high school is an inaccurate representation of society in the real world is entirely factual, as is the statement that high school does a poor job of preparing students for the adult life. However, this is not due to the fact that students mature more quickly today. In fact, even the word "mature" is misleading. Today's children do in fact reach puberty faster, but do they really mature, American culture fosters irresponsibility in its students. This is largely due to the fact that many parents in America do a poor job of raising their students, and teaching them priorities and responsibility. Teenagers in America often don't have to work to attain what they want, and they grow up with a feeling of entitlement, expecting society to cater totheirneeds, and to work fortheirbenefit. Although children do reach puberty faster, they are by no means more mature or more ready for adulthood than they were in the early 20th century. Botstein's proposed solution to the problem is almost more absurd than what he claims caused it. The notion of abolishing the American high school system and rebuilding it from scratch is comparable in naivety to that of disbanding and rebuilding the entire American government. Financially speaking, it is impossible, and practically speaking, no one would agree to it.
